Ongar Millennium History Society

House Histories

The Ongar Millennium History Society has started a project to investigate the history of Ongar buildings, initially those in the High Street. We intend to build on the architectural survey that was carried out by the Workers’ Education Association in the 1950s, and to include all available historical information. This will be obtained from such resources as are available at Essex Record Office, websites such as www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk , property deeds, censuses, sale catalogues etc.

With the kind co-operation of the property owners, we have already investigated two 17th century buildings. We are now working on other properties - ‘Wren House’, ‘The Old House’ and ‘Jessamine’ - and are keen to extend this to other buildings.

If you are interested in learning more about your property either by your own investigation or by working with the Society, or if you have any historical information about your own or other buildings in the High Street, we would very much like to hear from you. You can e-mail info@omhs.org.uk .
